A Few More Up-cycled Jewelry Boxes

by Margaret Kalal

These three up-cycled jewelry boxes were transformed with paint, decoupage and a little interior redesign.  A new coat of a bright, crisp color really pops these little boxes. No two boxes are ever alike. Take a look at the November 3rd blog for more photos of jewelry box makeovers.

Fun with Wine Corks and Labels

by Margaret Kalal

There are tons of projects you can create with wine corks, labels, bottles and crates. Here are a few that were completed over the past year.

An 11X14 frame was covered with wine labels and filled with cork to make unique bulletin board.

I painted the round table top in a light gray and the legs in a black gloss. Then I used E6000 glue to adhere the corks to the table top. I cut the corks in half to fill the center, using the rounded tops and bottoms. Above you will see how the table looked before I placed a 1/4" piece of glass on top to protect the cork and to make a flat surface.

Wine Label Tables

I used about 2 dozen wine labels to decoupage the top of this little side table. The black gloss finish and glass top really made a statement.

This was a coffee table that was perfect for a bunch of labels. I painted the table a neutral brown color, slightly distressed the edges and applied a sealant as it was going to be a patio table. There are loads of labels on here - no two are exactly the same! I topped it off with a long piece of glass so we could use outside all year long.

Wine Crate Bench

This outside bench is a combination of wine crates and metal working done by a very talented friend of mine. It measures about 8 ft. long and fit perfectly under a set of windows on the covered patio. I just threw some pillows on top to finish off the look. This is one of my favorite pieces.

Carousel Horse Turnaround

by Margaret Kalal

I've always wanted to repaint an old carousel horse and I finally found one at a local warehouse. Initially I had plans to paint every bit of the horse exactly like you would find it on a carousel but after sizing up the project, I opted to spray it with a textured paint and call it a day. I think the end product looks pretty neat in my backyard.

I used a textured spray paint (took 4 cans!) to cover the carousel horse. I sprayed a large dowel gold, capped it with a decorative curtain rod finial and placed it down the center of the horse. I used another gold-sprayed dowel for the head handles and capped them black drawer knobs. Once the horse finished I filled a planter with succulents and inserted the pony pole in the center. It has made a cute addition to my garden.

Nothing Wrong with a Pink Table

by Margaret Kalal

I found this 3-tiered pie table deep in a warehouse piled to the ceiling with wonderful antiques. It was in a stack of discarded items that were in need of lots of TLC. It had been painted a flat black and had several broken or split wood sections. Once the repairs were completed with a good quality wood glue and some new hardware to the legs supports I decided to make it a very feminine piece for either a bedroom or bathroom accent.

Here is a before pic with the flat black paint finish. This took several coats of Kilz spray to adequately cover the black.

Loved the finish in pink and cream with a Parisian stencil directly on top. The cream colored edges were slightly distressed and then sealed with a polycrylic.

I added a Moulins de Provence stencil on the top tier for a touch of France effect. This little table sold  the same day I took it to Unique Boutique.
